From 1992 to 2005 Ashley ran his own geological consulting company in NZ, specialising in geological aspects of geothermal energy and geohazards. He has a good working knowledge of volcanic and sedimentary processes working and sampling with research geologists in the Rotorua district.
Ashley completed several safety management courses and held positions in NZ such as member of Emergency Management Group and Search & Rescue advisor.
He began working with Terra Search as an exploration geologist in 2006. Major assignments in that time have been:
- 6 months (2009) exploring for base metal hosted massive sulphides and breccia hosted gold with Liontown Resources in the Charters Towers district
- 12 months (2008-2009) with Cloncurry Metals exploring for epithermal gold in North East Qld; Proterozoic Broken Hill Type Pb-Zn-Ag and Iron Oxide Cu-Au deposits Eastern Succession, Mt Isa Block
- 18 months (2006-2008) exploring for mineral sands in the Eucla Basin of SA, WA for Diatreme Resources.
- Ashley successfully discovered for Diatreme Resources the Cyclone zircon rich heavy mineral deposit at Wanna Lakes, in the remote WA section of the Eucla Basin. Cyclone is now an advanced project with an indicated resource of zircon and titanium.
- In his first year with Terra Search (2006) , Ashley gained a variety of experience including logging geologist on the high sulphidation Mt Mackenzie gold project, Central Qld; ground magnetic surveys in the Eastern Succession, Mt Isa; exploration data management for the Qld Department of Minerals and Energy, surface sampling and geological evaluation.
Specific skills and tasks that Ashley has mastered during his 20 year career involved in geology include: geological mapping, drill supervision, percussion and core logging, surface geochem sampling, ground magnetic surveying.
Ashley has experience with geochemical sampling and planning for:
- Stream Sediments
- Heavy concentrate
- Rock outcrops
- Drill holes
- Discharge testing of water wells
Ashley also has extensive underground experience (thousands of hours) in large phreatic cave systems in NZ, PNG and Australia.
Ashley's specific skills include
- Ability to arrange all statutory permits and meet environmental conditions for sampling work
- Ability to locate and manage groundwater resources and investigate contamination
- Geophysical surveys – measuring resistivity, radio induction and GPS to detect concealed deposit locations.
- Extensive working skills with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy as well as electron microscopes and chemical and mechanical examination of samples
- Report and map production along with professional papers detailing results
- Computer use to integrate and interpret geological, environmental, chemical and meteorological data sets
- Compiling databases for GIS
